Day 3 – Cortez, Colorado

The five of us on this ride (Tom, Russ, John, Greg and I) just walked back to our nearby Rodeway Inn motel after enjoying some good conversation and an amazingly good Mexican meal and margaritas. Second day of Mexican food. It’s the most popular and good place to eat.

And as we near the Rodeway Inn motel Russ wants to know our destination for tomorrow’s ride.

Since we’re in hot weather now and we want cooler weather; Colorado seems to be the logical choice. Tom has never seen anything in the direction of Cortez before and it’s only around 250 miles away. Greg, John and I had previously ridden the Colorado BDR. That just leaves Tom who is partial to any direction chosen as long as it includes the Million Dollar Highway.

In the state of Colorado of the United States of America there’s a special highway built in the late 1880’s: the Million Dollar Highway, part of the San Juan Skyway. It’s one of the nation’s most spectacular drives.

You’ll be on the “outside” for a while with a hell of a view to your right. Forget standard driving safety measures like guardrails and shoulders, there aren’t any on this stretch, so swerving off the road is not advised!

And so Cortez, Colorado was chosen as the days end destination. For a motel stay we simply looked at Booking.com and chose the least expensive room. The Super 8, a wonderful two star motel was chosen and easily booked for around $40 bucks.

This is how decisions work on a motorcycle ride with five guys; a quick evaluation of options, an inventory of how we are all feeling and a command decision by one of us that just works perfectly.

And now this morning my friend Cooper from Big Bear shares with me the following. JJ a longtime friend has BNB cabins for rent and is another great resource for the area.

My favorite picture yet.
