Another couple called the morning net in La Paz (Mexico) and said they were setting off to Hawaii (some 3000 nm to the west) and asked if anyone could give them a weather forecast.

Even more amazingly, a chap had sailed from San Diego to La Paz on his newly purchased yacht and only taught himself to sail when his engine died after 24 hours at sea.   Such stories are sad, but very true. Don’t let this be you.

If you ever really want to hear some great stories talk to some of the tow boat drivers.  In my boating career I’ve been towed a least five, no just remembered (6) times from Catalina Island – four out of the six from breakdowns of my 2008 Kawasaki Ultra 250X.

On one trip back to the Long Beach dock I remember the tow boat guy telling me about his worse tow – from St. Nicholas Island.  Husband and wife boaters left Dana Point (CA) for Catalina Island; more than sufficient time passed when the wife stated, “should’nt we have been there by now?”  Normally this type of cruising boat has a range of 400 miles, obviously when the tanks are topped off.

The husband replied, no not yet and then began to appear worried, so he began driving the boat faster.  The boat ran out of fuel mid ocean and the wife suggested they call SeaTow.  The husband told her not to worry you won’t be getting a cell signal way out here.  Imagine his surprise when she finally did.  How can you miss an island on a powerboat or worse not carry sufficient fuel?

Just last month:  1 Man Critically Injured After Boat Crashes into Catalina Island -One man was critically injured and three others were hurt when a small fishing boat ran aground on Santa Catalina Island Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
